A lot was expected from RB this season; for the first time in the team’s history they bought everything the regulations allowed from Red Bull Racing. Team boss Peter Bayer, who replaced the experienced Franz Tost, tried to explain what went wrong on Friday.
Question: Peter, Friday was positive for your team. What do the racers say?
Peter Bayer: After Jeddah we concentrated on the balance of the car: aerodynamic and mechanical. We installed a new rear wing and it worked – both riders gave it a good rating. Everything was right for Yuki, but in Daniel’s case we know what to do.
Question: After last year’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, where Yuki led for five laps, the start of this season was not the most successful. Do you know the reason?
Peter Bayer: We are building on the fantastic legacy that Franz Tost left us, but Laurent Mekies was only able to join in January and we immediately focused on building the team, changing the structure and creating new positions. New people are coming to us, others will follow. This is exactly what we were working on.
We were fortunate to continue developing the car until the end of last year, and this year we focused on building the team. This is a long term project, I am sure we will see the fruits of this work by mid-season.
Q: The team earned points in Melbourne three years in a row. Can you continue this trend?
Peter Bayer: I’m an optimist, but you see how exciting the battle is in the middle group. If the top five teams finish, they simply take the entire top ten.
This causes the emergence of risky strategies and the early use of team tactics that are not normally used at this stage of the season. We have to experiment to earn points.
