Kevin Magnussen started the second part of qualifying for the Australian Grand Prix, in which he recorded the fourteenth fastest time. The Haas driver hopes that the pace of the race will allow him to fight for points.
His teammate Nico Hulkenberg was hampered by Sergio Perez in the first fast lap and by a gust of wind in the second. As a result, the German stopped fighting in the first part of qualifying.
Kevin Magnussen (14th): “In today’s qualifying I was able to do some good laps. I think the result reflects the car’s capabilities, at least in qualifying.
If we start from fourteenth we can still fight to get into the top ten, but to do this we have to drive the race cleanly and hope that tire degradation will play into our hands.
The tire degradation seems acceptable, but the question is whether our race speed will be sufficient. I hope we can earn points, that’s why we’re here.”
Nico Hulkenberg (16th): “Perez hindered me on the first attempt and on the second I couldn’t get a clear lap. The lap was promising, but in turn seven I lost a lot of time because the wind changed direction. The front tires lost their efficiency and I couldn’t improve enough.
The gaps in the middle of the pack are minimal and the tire granulation this weekend could lead to some interesting options, so I’m looking forward to tomorrow.”
