The head of Pirelli’s racing department, Mario Isola, summarized the results of qualifying for the Australian Grand Prix and gave a prediction for Sunday’s race.
Mario Isola: “For a while it looked like we were in for a surprise in qualifying, but Max Verstappen once again showed who is in the lead here. Excellent performance in the qualifying final. He is clearly the favorite for the Grand Prix, but it will be interesting to see how the teams handle strategy in the race as some unknowns remain.
The information gathered over the past two days suggests that the Medium-Hard-Hard two-stop strategy will be the fastest. However, no one has done a long series of laps with the Hard tires yet, so the unknown factor remains. Although C3 is the best studied of the five compounds homologated this year.
Controlling tire granulation will be critical as Australian highway asphalt does not improve over time but becomes covered in worms. In addition, the high risk of a safety car or even red flags must be taken into account. So we have all the ingredients for an interesting and spectacular Grand Prix.”
