Leo Turini: Ferrari not ready to fight for the title yet

Italian journalist Leo Turini commented on Ferrari’s performance at the French Grand Prix, concluding that the Scuderia is not yet ready to fight for the title.

We’re not done yet. I say this as a Ferrari fan who loves the team. We are not ready yet, even though we may soon be able to change everything. I think such sad conclusions are inevitable after the events that have taken place in France.

Let me explain my thought. Yes, the 2022 Ferrari car is very good. Unfortunately unreliable, but fast on any type of track. The numbers speak for it.

A US website has gone to the trouble of calculating how efficiently Ferrari converts Saturday’s results into race points by using data collected before the race in France for analysis. It turned out that only Williams in the early 2000s with Montoya and the younger Schumacher had a worse balance than Ferrari has now.

We’re not done yet. Everyone knows that I love Charles and consider him an extraordinary talent. I’m sure an era will be named after him. But this season, Leclerc made two serious mistakes in the races, and Verstappen – none.

I was sorry to see Charles sad after the race, but I appreciated his candor. Leclerc is much better than the ultra fans, who I hope will soon forget the existence of Formula 1.

Charles’ attitude reminded me of the episode with Michael Schumacher in Monaco in 1996 when, after starting from pole position, he crashed the car on the first lap. Michael went to reporters and took all the blame and protected the team from any suspicion.

We’re not done yet. For weeks we puzzled over the mistakes of the team management, and even in France the inevitable pit stop of the magnificent Sainz was far from exemplary. In this case, we’re talking about the team having to get used to working under record pressure, but recent events have shown that we’re not ready for that yet.

However, I remain convinced that the team is on the right track. I don’t think we’re going to win this year. But we must bring together the best we have, starting with Leclerc, and not start a political struggle for absurd reforms in 2023. I hope John Elkann does his job.

In a few days you have to win the race in Hungary.
