In our look back at Saturday’s Formula 2 sprint in Melbourne, we warned that the race results could be revised – and they were.
After the finish, the stewards examined in detail all the incidents, of which there were more than enough, and made their decisions, the most important of which was to impose a 10-second penalty on Campos Racing driver Isaac Hajjar.
It was Hadjar who was recognized at the start of the race as the main suspect in the incident, which wrecked the cars of his teammate Jose Maria Marti and Invicta Racing driver Gabriel Bortoleto. Both got out immediately.
All three were called before the stewards, who watched the video recordings of this dramatic episode, after which they passed their verdict: it was the Frenchman who suddenly shifted to the right in an attempt to stay ahead of Roman Stanek, who started from pole, and at the same time he didn’t see what was wrong with his car and was almost equal to Jose Maria Marti.
To avoid a collision, Marty also had to swerve to the right and ultimately collided with Bortoleto. The stewards correctly ruled that this all happened due to Hadjar’s actions, and he deserves a 10-second penalty.
Thus he lost the win, dropping to 6th place, and Roman Stanek, the Czech Trident driver, moved up to 1st place, for whom this would be the best performance of his entire time in Formula 2. Dennis Hauger moved up to 2nd place, Bortoleto’s teammate Kush Maini took third, although we didn’t see him on the podium today. But now he has 33 points and has risen to 3rd place in the personal rankings.
And that’s not all the fines: Oliver Berman, who made a great debut in Formula 1 a few weeks ago, returned to the wheel of an F2 car this weekend, but he was unlucky enough to be PHM AIX Racing driver Pushed Joshua Duerksen off the track. The 18-year-old Brit also received 10 second penalties. As a result, Berman dropped from 8th to 15th place and the final prize point at the end of the race went not to him, but to Zach O’Sullivan.
