Sunday’s Formula 3 race in Melbourne ended with a victory for Dino Beganovic. Together with him, Leonardo Fornaroli and Gabriele Mini climbed to the podium.
The start for the top five was quiet and pole holder Leonardo Fornaroli retained the lead. Behind on the exit of the first corner, Tim Tramnitz caught Tasanapol Intrafuvasak’s car, which was spun and thrown into Sophia Flörsch’s car. Tramnitz continued to drive, while Flörsch and Intrafuvasak stopped with broken suspension.
In turn eleven of the first lap there was a collision between Tommy Smith and Joseph Loke, leaving both stuck in the gravel. The safety car came onto the track.
The race resumed on the sixth lap of twenty-three. The top three retained their positions and Luke Browning overtook Nikita Bedrin at turn three in the battle for fourth place. Arvid Lindblad took advantage of Bedrin’s loss of speed and also passed Nikita in turn four.
Fornaroli set the best lap in an attempt to break away from his pursuers, but in the seventh lap his result was improved by Dino Beganovic.
On the eighth lap, Oliver Goethe tried to attack Bedrin, but he made a mistake and let Marie Boya pass. However, Oliver quickly recovered and regained seventh position. At the end of the lap, Santiago Ramos, after contact with Noel Leon, went to the pits to replace the punctured right rear tire, and Leon – the front wing.
On the twelfth lap, Beganovic attacked Gabriele Mini and moved up to second place. Joshua Dufek spun at the exit of turn ten and Callum Voisin, driving close, avoided a collision with his opponent by driving around him at full speed on the gravel. Oliver Goethe and Arvid Lindblad dropped to the bottom of the top ten.
On the following lap, Meaney dropped out of the top three after being overtaken by Luke Browning.
On the fourteenth lap, Beganovich overtook Fornaroli, overtaking him before the ninth turn and taking the race lead.
On the fifteenth lap, Mari overtook Boya Bedrin at turn nine in the battle for sixth place. During the third sector Nikita lost two more positions, missing Sebastian Montoya and Charlie Wurtz. On the next lap, Montoya and Wurz passed Boya in turns one and three respectively.
On the eighteenth lap Wurz overtook Montoya and Goethe overtook Bedrin in the battle for eighth place. Just before the finish Nikita regained eighth place and gained his first points of the season.
On the twenty-second lap, Meaney attacked Browning entering turn nine and regained his place on the podium.
Dino Beganovic confidently led the race to his first victory of the season. Leonardo Fornaroli finished second and reached the podium for the second time this season. Gabriele Mini’s third place was his best result of the season. Luke Browning, who finished fourth, extended his lead in the individual competition.
The next Formula 3 race will take place from May 17 to 19 in Imola, Italy.
