Just like a year ago, Max Verstappen won qualifying in Melbourne and took his third consecutive pole position this season. Sergio Perez showed the third result, but will only start from the third row, as the stewards gave him a penalty in the form of depriving him of three starting positions for interfering with Nico Hulkenberg on the track.
Max Verstappen (1st): “I suppose today’s pole position was a bit of a surprise, but I’m really happy with how the last session went – both attempts went well and I had fun. Although it was a difficult weekend earlier, we were able to win qualifying in the end, so I’m very happy.
But it seems like Ferrari is able to maintain a good pace over long stretches of laps, so it’s still questionable how tomorrow’s race will go, but I think that’s why it promises to be very interesting. Overall we will see what awaits us on Sunday.”
Sergio Perez (3rd): “It was definitely possible to do a better lap. I couldn’t handle the first sector well in the last attempt, especially the first corner. I couldn’t conquer the first set of corners perfectly and immediately lost a tenth or even one and a half.
However, I’m happy when I think about where we were at the start of the weekend. But now we have made good progress, so tomorrow we will try to give Ferrari and all the other rivals a fight.
I think there will be a lot of tire degradation as the race goes on, so starting position is not that important.”
