Alex Albon’s Williams car, seriously damaged in Friday’s accident, will be sent to the Grove base for repairs in the hope it can be restored in time for the Japanese Grand Prix.
James Vowles, team leader: “Initially we planned to use three chassis from the first phase, but we have limited resources. Much of it was spent on improving infrastructure and increasing machine efficiency. We’ve been putting off work on the third chassis all this time, but we don’t have it. We planned to take the third chassis to the third stage – to Australia, but it is not ready yet.
The root cause is that we have completely changed the approach to chassis production. This year’s car has almost ten times more parts than last year’s. This is another level of difficulty.
In modern Formula 1, no team can do without a third chassis. The last time this happened to me was in 2009 with Brawn GP. And then we were lucky, we could have easily lost the championship because of one serious accident.
Unfortunately, we are behind in everything, so we have to sacrifice something. In our case this is the third chassis.
I’m sure we’ll have two cars in Japan. I can’t guarantee this 100% – it all depends on the analysis of the damage to the base, but the probability is very high.”
