Runner”Ferrari » Carlos Sainz won the Formula 1 stage in Australia.
The Spaniard missed the last Saudi Arabian Grand Prix due to surgery to remove the appendix; he was replaced by debutant Oliver Birman. On the eve of the weekend in Australia, it was possible that Sainz would not start the second consecutive race. However, the 29-year-old completed all free practice sessions and finished second in qualifying. In the first laps of the race, Sainz was ahead of Max Verstappen, who then retired due to technical problems. For the Spaniard, this victory was the third of his career.
Second at the finish, another Ferrari driver, Monegasque Charles Leclerc, also set the best lap. The top three winners were completed by Briton Lando Norris of McLaren.
On the final lap, George Russell crashed his car; earlier in the race, Lewis Hamilton also retired. Thus, Mercedes leaves the Australian Grand Prix without points.
The next stage of the championship will take place from April 5 to 7 in Japan.
