After three races of the season, Mercedes is second in the Constructors’ Championship, but in terms of sheer speed, the W13 is not only inferior to Ferrari, but also to Red Bull Racing. At the same time, Mercedes is expected to have no significant new products next weekend at Imola. Team leader Toto Wolff explained the reason for the lack of updates.
“I continue to believe that we will succeed with the current car,” Wolff told Racingnews365. – Many teams, including Ferrari, have not yet been able to solve the build-up problem on the straights, but they have added in those areas that we missed or, say, did not work effectively enough. The same can be said of Red Bull, whose car became faster every day after the tests in Bahrain thanks to new products.
As for our situation, it is very difficult for us to achieve data correlation because you can only move a car in a wind tunnel with a certain limited frequency. The car behaves differently on the highway. As a result, we have to look for new ways to analyze aerodynamic data, looking for a correlation between the simulator and the real world. But we have the tools and experts to understand exactly what we’re missing.
None of the solutions we tested in Australia unlocked the car’s aerodynamic potential or reduced the sway. We’re stuck in one place, so there’s no point in bringing updates that could confuse us even more. It is possible that an increase in downforce could lead to a deterioration of the build. We will continue to study this matter.”
