After the finish of the Australian Grand Prix, the stewards review the final lap incident involving George Russell and Fernando Alonso. The Mercedes driver crashed his car – he was closer to his opponent than normal in turn six, causing the front wing to lose downforce, sending Russell flying into the gravel.
The stewards will have to understand whether the rapprochement between Russell and Alonso is due to the fact that Fernando braked earlier than normal. Immediately after the finish, the Aston Martin driver denied that he had deliberately braked in front of George.
Fernando Alonso: “I was focused on what was happening in front of me, not behind me. In the last fifteen laps I had problems with the battery being unstable. At the end of the race I had problems, but I was focused on what was happening at the front, not on the back.
It’s good that George is doing well. I was very worried when I saw his car. He overtook me and was in the DRS zone for five or six laps. He was very close and I did qualifying laps to get the most out of the car.
Today I was lucky with the strategy and the virtual safety car after Lewis Hamilton retired, but we cannot hide the fact that we have problems with the speed this weekend.”
