When on the penultimate lap, George Russell’s car flew off the track in a battle with Fernando Alonso, crashed into a barrier, flew back and froze on the line, the panicked driver called on the FIA to stop the race.
The situation was indeed very dangerous: the car was lying on its left side, with the bottom in the direction of travel. From the bottom, it is in no way protected against a frontal impact, so even the slightest contact can lead to serious injuries.
“Red flag! Red flag! Red flag! I’m standing in the middle of the track. Red flag! Red flag! Red! Red! Red! Red! Red! I’m in the middle! Red! Damn hell!” – shouted the Briton, who is also director of the GPDA racing association.
Despite his requests, the FIA race director decided to run the final lap in virtual safety car mode, and a medical car was sent to the scene of the accident to pick up Russell.
There is no doubt that this issue will be discussed during the pilot briefing in Japan to ensure that similar situations do not arise again.
