Aston Martin team boss Mike Krak released a statement expressing his full support for Fernando Alonso, who was given a 20-second time penalty after the finish of the race in Melbourne for causing George Russell’s accident.
“Aston Martin fans, I would like to thank you for all the messages of support you have sent to the team since Sunday following the final results of the Australian Grand Prix,” wrote Mike Krak. “First of all, it should be noted that everyone in the racing world is happy that George is doing well and that he has left the accident scene alone.
I want you to know that we fully support Fernando. He has competed in more Grands Prix than anyone else and has more than twenty years of experience. He is a multiple world champion in various categories.
Receiving a 20-second penalty in a situation where there has been no contact with another car is a bitter pill to swallow, but we have to accept this decision. We have done everything we could, but without new evidence we cannot ask for the right to review the stewards’ decision.
Fernando is a phenomenal racer and he used every tool he had in his arsenal to finish ahead of George. We saw the same thing last year in Brazil when he fought Sergio Perez. This is the art of motorsport at the highest level. He would never hurt anyone.
Thank you to everyone who contacted us. Together we move forward. We look forward to racing in Suzuka in a few days and performing in front of our fans.”
