Sainz: I had chances to fight for the podium

In France, Carlos Sainz started from the last row and finished fifth, which can be considered a good result. However, the Spanish Ferrari driver believes he has had a chance to compete for the podium.

Carlos Sainz (5th): “It was unrealistic to claim the win today, but there were still chances to fight for the podium, but that took a perfect race. Max drove very fast today and I started from the last row, so it was difficult to compete with him.

But in my opinion we have recovered well, and if I had not received the penalty for replacing the power plant, I could have started either from pole or from the front row. Then, of course, it would be possible to fight for the win. But today I started the race from 19th position, besides that I earned a 5 second penalty and still finished fifth. I also got an extra bonus point for the best lap, so I don’t think the result is bad.

At the same time, I still think the team acted well and made decisions about tactics. Ferrari is often criticized for pit stop decisions, but in difficult moments we always discuss what the options could be, and all this does not lead to some kind of disaster, as some people try to make it.

Yes, I was told to go into the pits when I overtook Perez, but the team thought it was time to change tires and then break through the pack. Personally in that situation I thought maybe it would be better to take the risk, stay on the track and see what happens to the rubber, even though the Medium tires were already at the limit. But it seemed to me that if I held on to the finish, I could take third place. Now, however, we don’t know.

It seemed to me that this is possible, but the team always has more information and I am convinced that they acted with the best intentions.

Charles Leclerc (gets out): “I’m very upset. The race didn’t end the way I wanted, because our speed allowed us to fight for the win. I made a mistake and paid dearly for it. Now I’m back at home to recover for the next race and in Hungary I will have the chance to show it all.”
