Leo Turini is not surprised by Vettel’s desire to return to racing

Leo Turini, a veteran of Italian motorsport journalism, commented in his own way on the recent tests of Sebastian Vettel driving a Porsche hypercar and believes that you should not be surprised by the four-time world champion’s desire to return return to the circuit.

I am not surprised by Sebastian Vettel’s desire to return to the track. For now we’re talking about Porsche and WEC, and then we’ll talk about Formula 1.

This immediately brings back memories of the return of Michael Schumacher in 2010. The point is that if speed is in your blood, then this obsession, which manifested itself in childhood, will not go anywhere later.

Also a kind of way of understanding life, which can be accepted or rejected. But I’ve met many people who are disgusted by the very idea of being deprived of the emotions that come with competing. If this challenge is not there, they are simply bored with life. And we’re not just talking about motorsport.

Although I always admired my friend, the legendary alpine skier Alberto Tomba, who consistently refused offers to return to the slalom course even though he was promised mountains of dollars. But I respect those who do things differently.

Moreover, in Vettel’s case we have to talk about another special element: his passionate love for Ferrari. I felt it when I met him during his years racing for the Scuderia.

No one forced Sebastian to move to the team from Maranello, it was not a banal desire to be part of the Ferrari myth, but he really had an uneasy passion for this team since childhood. I believe he was willing to pay out of his own pocket just to have the opportunity to repeat the exploits of Michael, who was his childhood idol.

I saw him worry about failure. I believe the mistake he made at the Hockenheim circuit in 2018 haunted him for a long time. We’ll never know how that race would have ended if it hadn’t suddenly started raining…

I envy those who believe that they know exactly the answers to all questions and always judge with the utmost categoricity, but personally I believe that in the fate of any person any twists and turns can occur. And overall it seems to me that Vettel’s time at Ferrari is generally judged too harshly. Sebastian did his best and did everything in his power.

Of course, he made mistakes, but if you analyze the statistics of his performances in the Scuderia, it turns out that few people managed to achieve more. Yes, Vettel failed to win the title, but he worked with Ferrari during a period of Mercedes’ technological superiority, an important point that is often overlooked.
