After three races of the season, George Russell is second in the drivers’ standings, nine points ahead of teammate Lewis Hamilton. Ahead of the race weekend at Imola, the young Mercedes driver revealed that he did not contest Hamilton’s leadership of the team.
George Russell: “Sometimes there are riders in the same team at different stages of their career. At Mercedes there is no division into the first and second track, but the idea that I want to be the first is constantly in the subconscious of the riders.
In our case, the situation is slightly different, as Lewis has been playing for this team for many years. I am new to Mercedes and I am not going to try to become a team leader in the battle against the greatest driver of all time, who has been in the team for ten years. He’s like a team captain, but that’s the way it should be.
What I admire about Lewis is that he puts a lot of effort into other activities – in sports, in music, to take his mind off current events. I’m focused on racing – I devote my whole life to succeeding, but if you don’t give yourself a second to catch your breath, you could just suffocate and not get the most out of yourself.
