Rene Arnoux drove in Formula 1 for more than ten years and retired in 1989. He spent two seasons with Ferrari in 1983 and 1984.
The French motorsport veteran continues to closely monitor what is happening in the World Championship, and after the Scuderia’s victorious double in Australia, he believed his former team was very capable of competing with Red Bull Racing for the Constructors’ Championship.
“Carlos Sainz drove fantastically well during the weekend in Australia! – Arnoux shared this in an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport. – It is clear that Max Verstappen fell out of contention, but Ferrari was able to take full advantage of this.
We already know that the Ferrari SF-24 is faster than their car from last year, and we also see that the Italian team is already much closer to Red Bull. This was reconfirmed in Australia. Ferrari is still inferior to Red Bull, but has almost reached their level. However, it is also true that only Max Verstappen manages to pass both Ferrari cars.
In my opinion, Frederic Vasseur, as head of the Scuderia, has managed in a short time to ensure that his team learned to take full advantage of the advantages offered by the current technical regulations. Under him Ferrari became even stronger and on the race circuits it managed to gradually catch up with the leaders, one tenth at a time.
Additionally, I see Wasser addressing numerous issues that he was able to identify. If things continue like this, I believe Ferrari will claim victories on a regular basis, and in this case I wouldn’t rule out the possibility that they could challenge for the Constructors’ Championship. But on the condition that Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc continue to actively put pressure on the Red Bull drivers.”
At the same time, Arnoux expressed the hope that the situation in the championship team will soon return to normal: “First of all, I hope that all this talk about Horner’s inappropriate behavior will stop. I would like to see a real match between the two teams. That is why I wish Ferrari to overtake Red Bull at every stage so that it can enter the battle for the Constructors’ Championship.
That possibility exists because Sergio Perez is not yet performing at his best. Unless Ferrari faces serious problems this season, I am almost certain that their chances of winning the team championship are even better than Red Bull’s.”
