In 2021, the fate of the championship title was decided in the final race of the season in Abu Dhabi – Max Verstappen overtook Lewis Hamilton on fresh tires after FIA race director Mike Masi decided to restart one lap before the finish.
After the end of the season, Masi lost his post, the episode became one of the most controversial in Formula 1 history and Lewis Hamilton still believes his title was stolen from him.
“Has my title been stolen? The answer is obvious, says Lewis in an interview in the latest issue of GQ magazine. – You know this story. But what was really nice about that moment, and what I remember, was that my father was with me.
He and I went through a huge rollercoaster together, with ups and downs. And on the day I was in the most pain, my father was with me. He raised me to always stand up and hold my head high.
Of course I was going to congratulate Max, but at the time I didn’t realize the impact it would have. But I understood that a mini-me was watching me from the side. And this became a defining moment in my life.
I didn’t know how my action would be perceived, but I was certainly aware: I would walk the next 50 meters, and then I would fall to the ground and die, or I would get up.”
When Lewis was asked if he was still fixated on the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, he said: “When I see clips of that race I will still feel those emotions. But I’m at peace with it.”
