George Russell qualified sixth in France, more than a second behind pole holder Charles Leclerc. However, the Mercedes driver is optimistic and believes that thanks to the characteristics of the Paul Ricard circuit, he will stand a chance of battling for third place at the finish.
“I had a good first run in the qualifying final, but I made a mistake in the second fast lap,” said George after qualifying. – Sixth place at the start is not the end of the world, but I’m more worried about falling behind the leaders.
As far as I know, our team is the only one to close the gap in the leaders’ race compared to qualifying. In principle, this suits us, but on the other hand, it puts us in a difficult position throughout the season.
I am optimistic about the race as we believe we have chosen the right direction to move forward, but more importantly we are making progress. Obviously it’s hard to recoup when we’re so far behind pole, like in France, but I believe in the race we’ll be able to judge our real capabilities. It is possible that our car in the race will be faster than our usual speed this season.
We have a competitive pace with a full tank, so I should have a chance to compete with Sergio Perez. Even if Carlos Sainz had started ahead I probably would have had a chance to compete with Carlos. However, Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc are one step ahead of the rest.”
