On Thursday, the Formula 1 drivers in Suzuka continued to discuss the battle between Fernando Alonso and George Russell in Melbourne, which led to the Mercedes driver being thrown off the track. Nico Hulkenberg sided with George – the Haas driver believes that Alonso’s actions have led to a dangerous situation.
“When I saw the replay, I wasn’t too impressed with Fernando’s tactics,” Racingnews365 quoted Nico Hulkenberg. – Yet there is such a thing as an urban highway in Melbourne. That bend is quite narrow, we pass it at a speed of 260-270 km/h, and the exit from it is blind. If for some reason the flag warning system had not worked, or if someone had failed to respond and crashed into George, the outcome of the incident would have been completely different.
Although such tactics are quite common in Formula 1, in this particular corner at this speed and with a blind apex… I think this is the wrong angle for such actions, which led to a rather dangerous situation.
I also don’t understand why Alonso said something on the radio immediately after the incident about problems with the accelerator pedal – either the pedal was stuck or not. But he later stopped mentioning it and simply said such actions were standard operating procedure and tactics.
It seems he just changed his mind. Anyway, I wasn’t that impressed.”
