Pirelli believes that two pit stops are the optimal strategy for tomorrow’s race…
Mario IsolaPirelli: “On one of the most challenging circuits for drivers and cars, we saw Verstappen and Red Bull dominate qualifying, with both drivers occupying the entire front row for the first time in a year.
There is a clear favorite for tomorrow’s race, but there are many unknowns in the race, starting with strategy. Saturday was significantly cooler than last year, but the relegation was noticeable, making the two-stop strategy optimal again.
But what’s interesting is not so much the number of pit stops as the tire choice, especially since the Soft compound could work well tomorrow for those looking to make up as many positions as possible on the first lap.
Overtaking on this circuit is not easy, this season we have already seen that the current generation of cars increasingly suffer from instability when approaching an opponent’s car. Cutting – an attack resulting from a previous pit stop – will be very effective and become one of the factors in the battle in the race.
The fastest strategy is to use soft and hard compounds, but some teams – Ferrari, Red Bull, Aston Martin and Magnussen, who only have one C1 kit available, will have to try something different. They can drop C3 in favor of C2, which has proven competitive in training, or use all three formulations. The result is that the race must be interesting from start to finish.”
