Ferrari team head Frederic Vasseur admitted before the start of the Japanese Grand Prix that Fernando Alonso could stay ahead of Carlos Sainz as the Spanish Aston Martin driver has a fresh set of soft tires.
Frederic Vasseur: “We are afraid for Fernando Alonso, who has a fresh set of soft tires and will start behind Carlos. I think it’s unlikely that Aston Martin will keep this kit until the end of the race; it would be too risky. Alonso is more likely to decide to start because it would allow him to regain the position. Even though I don’t know this yet…
But today rubber degradation will be an important factor because it is much warmer now than yesterday morning. On Saturday the degradation of our cars was quite within normal limits, but we will see what awaits us today in higher temperature conditions.”
