Fernando Alonso: The result exceeded our capabilities

Fernando Alonso finished sixth at Suzuka and achieved as many points as Mercedes drivers George Russell and Lewis Hamilton combined. This allowed Aston Martin to maintain a one-point lead in the Constructors’ Championship over the Brackley team.

Lance Stroll finished twelfth after starting from sixteenth position.

Fernando Alonso (6th): “Great weekend for me. Yesterday I qualified fifth and today I finished sixth. This has been one of my best weekends in a long time. I think this weekend’s result was a bit beyond our capabilities, but this season I am racing well and bringing points to the team.

The race plan worked perfectly and I would like to give a special thank you to the guys for the pit stops – impressive work.

We still need to evaluate the effectiveness of the new products, so the team will study all the data collected this weekend before heading to Shanghai.”

Lance walk (12th): “It’s a difficult race. Starting from 16th meant we wouldn’t be able to use the optimal strategy, and as the race went on I had trouble finding myself on an empty track. Moreover, I lacked speed on the straights when I needed it. However, I managed to make a few overtakes in Turn 6, so it was fun.

I was hoping to catch Yuki Tsunoda in the battle for tenth place, but the Soft tires did not provide the necessary grip at the end of the race. Too bad we didn’t manage to earn points. We will use what we learned in a few weeks in China.”
