The Japanese Grand Prix ended with Red Bull Racing’s third victory of the season. After the finish, the head of the Pirelli racing division, Mario Isola, summarized the results of the fourth stage of the season.
Mario Isola: “I believe we saw another spectacular Formula 1 race today. On one of the most difficult tracks for drivers and equipment, we witnessed many overtaking actions and different strategies. Some of this diversity was possible because all three setups we chose for this stage turned out to be suitable. This allowed drivers to not only choose different compounds, but also when to make pit stops.
Although Red Bull and Max Verstappen once again had the advantage to secure victory relatively easily, behind us we saw great battles, not only on the track between the drivers, but also on the pit wall between the teams.
Today was the hottest day of the weekend. At the start the track temperature was +40C, but then dropped to +32C. As a result, we saw significant thermal degradation of the rubber, and those who handled it better were able to regain positions compared to the start.
We can especially highlight Charles Leclerc, who drove a brilliant race in this regard; his only pit stop allowed him to rise from eighth to fourth place.
In the race, ‘cutting’ proved to be very effective, but anyone who stopped too early would be left behind at the end of each segment. All these variables created a speed difference that encouraged overtaking, which was great for the spectators.
The fans, who filled the stands for three days, saw a great show and were able to celebrate local hero Yuki Tsunoda’s tenth place finish.”
