In Suzuka, Yuki Tsunoda earned points for the second time this season, and Daniel Ricciardo retired after an accident on the first lap…
Yuki Tsunoda (10th): “I feel relieved. It was a shame to lose several positions on the first start, but I was able to make up for it on the second. One of the best moments was the pit stop. Our technicians worked fantastically quickly, allowing me to regain two positions! Without this it would be much harder to earn points.
I’m happy that I was able to finish in the top ten for the Japanese fans. I’m happy. I had confidence in the race. We were slower on the straight, but had a small advantage in the corners, where downforce is important. This helped me make some good overtakes.
I’m happy with the way I worked with the tires. From this point of view, today’s race was one of the best.
I started my career in Japan and am happy that I was able to earn points on my home track. Thank you to everyone at Honda, Red Bull and Visa Cash App RB who have supported me on this journey. I feel like I didn’t finish tenth today, but first!”
Daniel Ricciardo (retreat): “Yesterday we adjusted the settings and I was looking forward to the race with optimism. In such a situation, a first-round retirement is the worst that can happen because you have no way to change anything. Fortunately, after a few checks, the doctors confirmed that Alex and I were not injured.
The start was unsuccessful, Yuki and I started the race on Medium and it was very difficult for us to fight with those who started on Soft. In the second corner the situation stabilized but I felt the car sliding and then I saw an Aston Martin car on the outside radius. I kept an eye on her, but as I prepared to enter turn three, Alex Albon was close by. I didn’t see him, and our cars hit each other.
This sometimes happens in racing and is part of it. It’s no one’s fault, there was just a huge difference in grip. Now we will concentrate on preparing for the Chinese Grand Prix.”
