In Japan, Carlos Sainz was on the podium again and his teammate, Charles Leclerc, finished fourth. Frederic Vasseur commented on the results of the Ferrari drivers this weekend.
Question: Your team achieved good results in Suzuka, and on a track dominated by Red Bull Racing. How do you rate the results of the race?
Frederic Vasseur: Sunday went excellently for our team. We recovered well after a number of problems that prevented us from qualifying. But we ran the race with confidence, used good tactics and worked correctly with the tires. If we want better results at the end of the weekend, we have to do better on Saturday.
Question: For the second stage in a row you managed to beat McLaren thanks to tactics. You see that your strategists make very good decisions. Have you changed anything in this department?
Frederic Vasseur: It’s true, today’s result was partly possible thanks to tactics, partly thanks to the right approach to the tyres. But if your pace is right, it will be easier to solve problems that arise during the race.
All this comes when you have confidence in your abilities. Then somehow it is calmer for us at the pit wall and it is easier to make the right decisions in a calm atmosphere, and in general everything is going in the right direction.
When a team works together, when everyone does their best, but does it in a calmer way, trust is built. And if events develop in an undesirable direction, and everyone is also in a bad mood, the opposite will happen.
During the winter off-season we made good progress on creating the SF-24, but this work started last year. Now everyone works more confidently, calmly and harmoniously.
Question: What expectations do you have for the stage in China, which includes a sprint?
Frederic Vasseur: When we talk about China, we don’t have a clear picture yet, because no races have been held there for years. The most important question that has no answer is the condition and characteristics of the asphalt pavement. If the weekend program includes sprints, it is not so easy to get a clear picture in one short training session for qualifying.
We will have to respond in accordance with the information we will collect as the weekend progresses. Let’s hope we can guess with the settings from the very beginning of the Chinese weekend.
