Sergio Perez: Racing is our passion, our dream

Sergio Perez finished second in Suzuka and is happy with how he spent the weekend…

Q: Sergio – for the third time in the last four Grand Prix you finished second. Are you satisfied with the result?
Sergio Perez: Yes. On Saturday everything went well, I had a good start in the race. Unfortunately, the increase in temperature changed the balance and increased tire degradation, and since Lando had two new Hard sets, this ruined the race a bit for me. But then the situation stabilized.

Q: You were ahead of both Mercedes cars at the top of 130R – the fastest corner on the lap…
Sergio Perez: Yes, that’s how it happened. I just followed them and stayed ahead of them in the fast 130R. Nice place!

Q: Do you hope to repeat this result in Shanghai in two weeks?
Sergio Perez: It’s a similar song, with a lot of fast and medium-fast sections. If we are fast at Suzuka, we will be competitive at many other tracks. The circuit in Shanghai suits us well.

Question: What do you think of the fact that this year the Chinese weekend will be held with a Saturday sprint?
Sergio Perez: I hope this time there are no problems with the route, drainage holes or anything else. Otherwise, given the only training, we won’t have time to do everything.

The sprint stage is good for entertainment, but it won’t be easy. I’ve never raced a Red Bull car there before, so there’s a lot to do in one session.

Question: Ten years have passed since Jules Bianchi’s fatal accident. When you go from circuit to circuit, do you have time to think that our sport is very dangerous?
Sergio Perez: We all know the risk. But racing is our passion, our dream, that’s why we’re here. We don’t think about the danger.

Of course we have a lot of respect for each other on the track. We know we are fighting at very high speeds. And yes, when you see an accident, like in Suzuka with Daniel and Alex, the first thing you want to know is if they are okay. And then the show can go on. It was a very sad day when Jules had a terrible accident.
