Envision Racing announced that the composition of the 9th and 10th stages, which will take place in Berlin on May 11 and 12, will be completely changed: instead of Sebastien Buemi and Robin Frijns, the team cars will be driven by Joel Eriksson and Paul Aron.
The change is prompted by the fact that Buemi and Frijns are combining Formula E with the World Endurance Championship and will be at the start of the 6 Hours of Spa this weekend in May. Interestingly, the Belgian leg of the WEC takes place on Saturday and the following day both are in Berlin, but only in support of their team and young drivers, of whom only Ericsson has experience in Formula E.
“This is a very unusual situation for our team and we are obviously disappointed that we could not avoid the overlap between the WEC and Formula E calendars,” admits Silvien Filippi, Managing Director of Envision Racing. “However, we will try to make the best of this situation, and I believe Joel and Paul are smart and competitive drivers.”
Ericsson, 25, currently serves as Jaguar’s reserve driver, but was allowed to drive for the Envision during the double round of Berlin. Once, in 2018, the Swede drove the team’s electric racing car during tests, and in the second half of the 2021 season he spent eight races in Formula E as part of Dragon/Penske.
Aron is 20 years old, this year he spends his first season in Formula 2 and after three stages he takes 2nd place in the individual championship of the youth series. The Estonian is considered one of the most promising drivers, and Envision will try to compensate for the lack of experience in driving electric Formula E vehicles with intensive work on the simulator. In addition, the Estonian will take part in a beginners training this week in Misano, which is included in the program of the Italian leg of the World Championship.
