Fernando Alonso explained his decision to stay in Formula 1 and Aston Martin after the end of the 2024 season…
Fernando Alonso: “Compared to what we talked about in February when the car was presented, nothing has changed. I had to do a few races, give myself a few weeks to think if I was ready to spend a few more years in Formula 1, because the calendar is more intense now, our schedule and our commitments.
My love for Formula 1 and Aston Martin has not changed, but I needed this time to talk to myself and make a decision.
It is clear that Formula 1 takes up all your time and energy. You have to give up almost everything in life to keep racing, and I wanted to ask myself if I was ready for that.
The decision was not difficult. I wanted to keep racing with Aston Martin, they wanted me to stay with the team. If two parties want something, at some point you will reach an agreement. I am happy to continue playing for this team, where I feel at home.
This also became an expression of loyalty to the team on my part. We started together a year and a half ago and have achieved a lot. Some of these achievements are unprecedented; many in Formula 1 dream of reaching such heights in such a short time. But I felt this was just the beginning of the journey. This cannot be the end of the journey for me and Aston Martin.
Am I going to perform in 2027? Hard to say. I can’t predict when I will stop racing, when I will stop racing. This won’t happen in 2025 or 2026, because one of the motives was to deal with the new regulations and work with Honda. Let’s put it this way: I’ll stay for at least two more years.”
