Alonso does not rule out returning to Le Mans with Aston Martin

Fernando Alonso’s career in Formula 1 is not only unique because of its record length; of all those at the start of this year’s Grand Prix, only he can boast the WEC championship title and victories in several 24-hour marathons. Together with Toyota he won Le Mans twice and in 2019 he took first place in Daytona as part of the Cadillac team (Nico Hulkenberg also managed to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2015, but only once).

The most important news of the week is of course his new contract with Aston Martin, which runs until the end of 2026. But Fernando has already made it clear that his interests still include more than just Formula 1.

When asked whether he will combine driving for Aston Martin with other projects, Alonso replied: “Not at the moment, because I am completely focused on Formula 1 and will not think about anything else. But in the future, if I don’t participate in F1 anymore, I will try to drive Dakar again, I can say that almost 100%. I still can’t stop thinking about this.

Aston Martin also has a Valkyrie project aimed at Le Mans, which will start next year. Who knows, I can also help in the implementation of this project in some way, I will drive this car or do something else.

I would like the Aston Martin team to win in all categories and in all conditions. I will help this brand because I feel part of it. I drive for the Aston Martin team in Formula 1, but ultimately the company makes road sports cars and so on. We wish her much success in all areas.”

As the World Cup calendar is very busy and already consists of 24 stages, it is unlikely that Alonso will be able to combine Formula 1 and participation in the Aston Martin project linked to Le Mans. However, this cannot be completely ruled out. But most likely Fernando’s return to endurance racing and rally raids will have to be postponed for a few years. However, we know he is a truly goal-oriented individual, and there is virtually no doubt that he will return to these projects once the right circumstances arise.
