McLaren is preparing for a difficult Chinese Grand Prix

McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri are preparing for the difficult Grand Prix of China. The team makes no secret of the fact that the characteristics of the Shanghai circuit are not suitable for their MCL38 car.

Lando Norris: “It’s been a while since we last played in Shanghai, so I’m looking forward to coming back. The last race turned out to be relatively difficult for us, but the team still managed to earn points. After the weekend we drew conclusions and started preparing for the upcoming stage.

It will be interesting to see what results can be achieved during a sprint weekend. A different format makes the weekend more interesting for everyone. The track may not be ours, but we are ready to give our best again.”

Oscar Piastri: “I’m really looking forward to performing in China for the first time. The track in Shanghai is new to me and as we head into the first sprint stage of the season, it is important to train as effectively as possible to get to know the track as best as possible. Of course I have already studied it on the simulator at the base in Woking, but on the real track everything feels different.

I hope we have a successful weekend and can earn some points for the team.”

Andrea Stella, team leader: “We return to Shanghai for the next stage of the season – the Chinese Grand Prix. In 2024 we will have a sprint format weekend for the first time. This gives you a better chance of earning points, but it also increases the challenge of doing your best in one practice session and gathering the necessary information for the race. It is also important to take into account the fact that we have not driven on this circuit for five years.

Of all the circuits we participated in this year, the Shanghai circuit seems the least suitable for our car. And we also have to take into account the factor of unpredictable weather. Lack of information across teams not only makes the task more difficult, it also opens up opportunities. We work hard to prepare as best as possible and take advantage of all opportunities.

We know we have to improve to compete consistently at the top, but as always we will do our best this weekend to compete with our rivals.”
