Okon: Qualification is key in Hungary

A year ago, Esteban Okon won the Hungarian Grand Prix, taking his first career win – and the first win for the Alpine team. Conditions are unlikely to turn out this way again, but the team is really hoping…

Q: Are you happy with how your home podium went – the French Grand Prix?
Esteban Ocon: Our goal was a double finish in points – and we achieved this result for the home fans. In addition, we are now ahead of McLaren in the battle for fourth place in the Constructors’ Championship – the team has fully deserved this result.

The hard work of our staff on the track, at the bases in Enstone and Weary is paying off, we have seen yet another proof that we are on the right track. I want to thank again the fans who came to cheer the team over the weekend. They were great!

It would be difficult to imagine a Formula 1 calendar without a Grand Prix in France, without a lap in a country with such a rich motorsport heritage. I hope we will fight again for the French fans next year.

Q: This week we return to Budapest, where you won the race last year. What do you feel?
Esteban Ocon: The return to Budapest will be emotional. I remember last year’s stage very well, but that was then, and now we have to focus on the next stage.

It is important to start the stage with confidence that we will be able to secure fourth place in the Constructors’ Championship. We know it’s not easy, but we have a strong team and everything we need to make it happen. This is the last push before a well-deserved break for a team that has been hard at work all year.

Q: What do you like about the Hungarian circuit?
Esteban Ocon: Hungaroring is one of my favorite tracks, and not just because I won this race. I like the fast and smooth second sector. It’s impossible to breathe from Turn 4 to Turn 11, but if you’ve managed to fine-tune the car, you feel like you’ve got the most out of it.

This is a really interesting song. Yes, overtaking is harder than anywhere else, so a good performance in qualifying is essential.
