Fernando Alonso won the first of his 23 victories in Hungary in 2003, and now he hopes to extend his hit streak to eight in a row…
Q: In France you finished in the top ten again. How do you rate last weekend?
Fernando Alonso: The weekend was not easy, but on Sunday everything went well. During training I couldn’t find the optimal settings, before qualifying I was not happy with the balance, but then everything worked out. We proved that we can have a clean weekend, with a good result.
For us, sixth or seventh place is a very realistic goal. In the race I calmly checked the speed and tires – we executed our plan. The support of the French fans cheered me up. I hope we can perform at the same level in Hungary and leave for the summer holidays in a good mood.
Q: You have often competed in Budapest, which race do you remember the most?
Fernando Alonso: In Hungary I got my first win in Formula 1. That year we had a fast car, we didn’t expect a win, but it turned out that the track suited our car.
Last year the Alpine team took their first win in Formula 1. Usually this weekend coincides with my birthday, so there are so many positive memories that it’s hard to pick just one.
In Hungary the track is not easy, narrow and twisty – a real challenge for riders. Overtaking is difficult, but we will see how the situation changes with new cars. Qualification will, as always, be very important.
Q: In France you set another record – you have completed the most laps in the history of Formula 1 racing. Now you want to break other records?
Fernando Alonso: I knew about this record at the beginning of the weekend. It’s always nice to be a record holder, to see your name next to and in front of some great athletes.
In any sport it is very difficult to perform at a high level for a long time, this requires concentration, discipline and constant work on yourself. But in sports there is always more to achieve!
