Mika Salo, a former Formula 1 driver who also competed for a long time in endurance racing in the GT1 and GT2 classes, including twice the 24 Hours of Le Mans, returns to this motorsport category, but in a different capacity.
Finn, 57, has been appointed as a consultant for the GT World Challenge Europe series. The first round of the season has already taken place at Paul Ricard in early April, the next one is scheduled for the first weekend of May and will be held at the famous Brands Hatch circuit, and there are a total of 10 stages on the calendar, including the 24 Hours of Spa.
“My role is to assess controversial situations on the circuits from the driver’s perspective,” said Mika. – I will apply the experience I have gained over a long time in different racing classes. Of course, the GT category and driving style have changed significantly since I retired. More and more cars are appearing on the starting line and the competition has become much fiercer. But I have done similar work in series such as Formula 3 and Formula 1.”
Salo competed in Formula 1 from 1994 to 2002, after which he switched to GT racing and retired in 2016, most recently working actively with the FIA as a guest steward. Since last year, he has also been commenting on the World Cup races on the Viaplay TV channel in the role of one of the experts.
