Norris: There are a number of areas where we are behind

Lando Norris makes no secret of the fact that the McLaren car’s weaknesses could be fully exposed at the Chinese circuit, but emphasizes that the team is in a good position overall, and once it succeeds in some solve problems, it will be able to claim victories.

Lando Norris: “I think it will be more difficult for us in Shanghai than in Suzuka. For now we stick with this view, although the team is still in a good position overall. We are happy with the start of the season, there is a very interesting battle in qualifying with Aston Martin and Mercedes and in the previous stage we even managed to stay ahead of Ferrari.

However, the balance of power remains the same for the time being: although we are not doing as well as Ferrari and Red Bull, everything is generally going well, we are confidently ahead of Mercedes and Aston Martin. On the one hand, our team did not perform well on the track in Shanghai in 2019, but on the other hand, a lot has changed since then. I think it’s entirely possible that this weekend will go well for us.

Long turns remain our weakness. The McLaren car doesn’t handle these kinds of corners very well, but we will try to deal with it as the team continues to work hard to improve. It is likely that our weaknesses will not show up in qualifying, but we could face more serious problems in the race.

We are still far from victory, although I do not rule out that we can still achieve success this year if we are in the right place at the right time, if we can increase the efficiency of the car – we have this necessary . To be honest, we didn’t have to worry that much in Suzuka. Everything went as we expected.

Although we can potentially move up one place, we have generally done well there. In any case, we have been behind Red Bull and Ferrari all season, but at the same time we are one step ahead of other teams. This has been reconfirmed in Japan, although we know what we need to work on.

I agree with Andrea Stella, our team leader, when he says that we can win the race this year. But on one condition: so far there are two teams ahead of us, so first we have to work hard to increase the speed of the car.

There are some areas where we have fallen behind in recent years, but if we can make improvements I have no doubt we will perform well in some races.”
