Fernando Alonso set the third fastest time in qualifying for the Chinese Grand Prix sprint. The Aston Martin driver is satisfied with the speed of the car under varying conditions and on a wet track. His partner Lance Stroll finished the battle in the second part and will start fifteenth tomorrow.
Fernando Alonso (3rd): “Qualifying for the sprint turned out to be quite stressful. Even during the first session we were constantly monitoring the weather radar in anticipation of rain. I reached the final without any problems, where I posted the eighth fastest time, and then the rain got heavier.
It turned out that we are quite competitive under changing circumstances. The tires worked better every lap, but the track conditions deteriorated as the rain became heavier. In such conditions it was difficult to predict the grip on the asphalt and what risks could be taken.
Two races will be held this weekend. Let’s see if we can earn points in the sprint and perform well in qualifying for Sunday’s race.”
Lance walk (15th): “We had a productive training and towards the end of the session I was able to make some good steps forward on the Soft tires. However, in qualifying for the sprint I simply did not have enough grip on dry asphalt. Then it started to rain and I couldn’t do the second fastest lap in the second part.
Considering that I start fifteenth in the sprint, we don’t have many options. But we will use the information we received today and see what we can do in the remaining sessions of the weekend.”
