Christian Horner said the team will not rush to extend Sergio Perez’s contract until 2025. The head of Red Bull Racing is satisfied with the Mexican driver’s results in the first races, but wants to make sure that Sergio continues to show high consistency throughout the season.
Christian Horner: “I’m afraid we are still a long way from confirming the squad for next season. It’s just unbelievable that we’re only having the fifth stage, and there’s already so much talk about next year’s lineups.
We are very happy with our two riders, but will make a final decision on the line-up much later. Max has a long-term contract and Sergio’s contract expires at the end of the year, but he has driven brilliantly this season.
Of course Sergio wants us to confirm it tomorrow, but the team will not rush because we are in a privileged position where many riders want to ride for us. We are happy with the current pair of drivers, but we want to ensure that the level of consistency Sergio is now showing will be maintained throughout the season.”
Responding to Helmut Marko’s claim that Audi had offered Carlos Sainz so generously that Red Bull would not be able to outbid him, Horner said: “This is pure speculation. We have no idea if Audi offered Carlos anything, and if so, what exactly.
Sainz is an important player in the driver market, so it is logical that there is increasing interest in him. Audi would be foolish not to consider a driver of his caliber. The same can be said about other teams with open positions.”
