Fernando Alonso collided with Carlos Sainz on the sixteenth lap of the sprint in Shanghai. As a result of the incident, the Aston Martin driver suffered a puncture, damaged his underbody and retired from the race. Commenting on what happened, Fernando blamed the Ferrari driver.
Fernando Alonso: “It’s a difficult race. Carlos and I rode side by side through several corners. There was a wheel-to-wheel battle between us, and in the end someone had to give way – in the eighth corner I even drove off the optimal racing line to avoid contact, and in the ninth corner he did not give way to the racing line, and therefore we have not avoided contact.
In the sprint we were at least talking about two or three points, because in terms of pure speed we could count on a seventh or eighth place. It’s a shame we didn’t finish, but at least we didn’t lose that many points.”
