Mostly cloudy. Dry track. Air +11C, rail +14C
Many brought novelties to Imola, but the rain made it impossible to work well with them. Formula 3 morning practice was interrupted several times by red flags and was completed ahead of schedule, Formula 2 practice was postponed. At the start of the free races in Formula 1, the rain subsided, but there was a lot of water on the track.
The new Formula 1 cars took to the track for the first time in such conditions – on the only rain-tested day in Barcelona, the track was artificially humidified. Valtteri Bottas was the first to take to the track on heavy wet tires, followed by the rest, ramping up slowly.
There were no flights. Leclerc spun twice, Latifi, Ocon, Norris and Magnussen flew into the gravel, Sainz made a brake error and drove onto the grass – with no effect on the cars.
Rain tires drained a lot of water, but track conditions slowly improved – it was only in the middle of the session that the riders were able to switch to medium rubber and in the final minutes the asphalt was almost dry.
The session was interrupted by red flags in the 54th minute – Lando Norris got stuck in the gravel, but was then able to take off and return to the pits.
After completing the training, Bottas flew off after a bend in Turn 12 – the car did not catch the guardrail, but got stuck with its rear wheels in the gravel.
Charles Leclerc took the lead with a lap time of 1:29.402. The next session of Formula 1 is qualifying on Friday. The forecast does not promise serious precipitation.
