Trident driver Zane Maloney won qualifying for the second round of the Formula 3 season at Imola. Joining him in Sunday’s race, Roman Stanek will start from the front row.
At the start of qualifying, the rain had stopped in Imola, but the track remained wet, so the riders set out for their first run on wet tires. Ido Cohen showed the first fast lap, but almost immediately his result was surpassed by several riders led by Zach O’Sullivan.
As the track dried up, speeds increased and drivers improved their times on almost every lap. Not without trips off the track, but without consequences for racing equipment. The series leader of the first round was finished by Arthur Leclerc of Prema with a time of 1:43.904 seconds.
For the second attempt, the riders went twelve minutes before the end of the session and Enzo Trulli risked starting on slicks. The battle for leadership unfolded between Stanek, Marten, Sosi, Maloney, Berman and Leclerc.
Five and a half minutes before the end of the session, qualifying was stopped by red flags. At Turn 17 Arthur Leclair overtook the slow Trulli but Enzo’s car was blown into the opponent and he sent Leclerc into a U-turn, after which the Prema rider got stuck in the gravel.
The break lasted just over five minutes before the battle for pole position continued. Ido Cohen set the fastest time, but his result was surpassed by a large group of drivers led by Zane Maloney, who won the first pole of his Formula 3 career.
The starting grid for Saturday’s race has been reversed – the riders taking the top 12 places will start in reverse tomorrow. Franco Colapinto will start from pole position on Saturday. Together with him, Ido Cohen will start the race from the front row. Alexander Smolyar qualified fifteenth.
