Ecclestone: Lewis goes to Ferrari to boost his ego

Lewis Hamilton will continue his career at Ferrari in 2025. Former Formula 1 head Bernie Ecclestone said he finds the seven-time world champion’s decision strange.

“Lewis has made a strange transition,” Racingnews365 quotes Ecclestone. “Toto Wolff relied on him a lot and they both became close for selfish reasons. But I don’t think they’ve ever had a relationship where they could completely trust each other. Obviously, no such relationship existed, which is why Hamilton suddenly decided to leave.

His decision came as a big surprise to me because I don’t understand why he announced the decision a year in advance. Why didn’t Lewis wait to announce and make it during the season?

Ferrari thinks they made a smart deal by bringing him in, but I think Lewis went into it all to stroke his ego.

Frédéric Wasseur has known Lewis since he just started his career. For John Elkann, the chance to get one of the best Formula 1 drivers into the team, and some consider Lewis the best, is also a chance to stroke his ego. It happens, it’s just a lot of factors coming together.

Bernie Ecclestone added that he would not invite Hamilton to his team: “There are too many unnecessary complications. In a sense, Lewis is really in charge at Mercedes. Toto allowed him to do this so that Lewis would be satisfied and not leave. But in my team I never allowed riders to do this kind of thing.”
