Stefano Domenicali: I admired Senna

Formula 1 boss Stefano Domenicali will attend the memorial for Ayrton Senna and Roland Ratzenberger in Imola today before heading to Miami.

Stefano Domenicali: “I immediately realized that I couldn’t miss this event. I represent Formula 1 and I should be there. Senna’s death has played a big role in history, for Formula 1, the FIA and for me personally, because I am from Imola.

I was on the track when Senna died, and what I remember most is the sudden silence, when 100,000 people suddenly fell silent. Everyone immediately felt that something tragic had happened.

Barrichello’s accident on Friday, the deaths of Ratzenberger and Senna. This is one of the most tragic moments in modern Formula 1. Senna’s influence on improving safety was enormous. Since his death, the FIA has made major changes and that legacy will always be with us.

Senna was a great driver and man. He did everything he could to become the best in Formula 1 and was able to give a lot back to his compatriots in Brazil.

I have always admired Senna. He was very straightforward, he just was who he was, and I liked that. With his partner, with the team manager and with the then FIA president, he always remained who he was and did not give in to anyone.

He had a strong personality, otherwise he would not have been able to participate in this battle. Riders may look very confident in their helmets, but otherwise they are human beings with their own fears and problems, just like anyone else. Senna was different, that’s why I admired him.”
