Red Bull Racing has confirmed the separation from Adrian Newey after 19 years of working together. He will step down from his duties as Formula 1 car designer to focus on the RB17 hypercar, leaving Red Bull Technology permanently in the first quarter of 2025.
However, Newey will continue to attend some races until the end of the 2024 season to support the team on track.
Adrian Newey: “Ever since I was a kid, I wanted to design fast cars. I dreamed of becoming an engineer in Formula 1, and I was lucky enough to make that dream come true.
For almost twenty years, it has been a great honor to play a key role in the development of Red Bull Racing, from debutants to a multiple title-winning team. However, I think this is the right time to pass the baton to others and seek new challenges for myself.
In the meantime, we are approaching the final stages of RB17 development, so my remaining time with the team will be focused on this project.
I would like to thank the many wonderful people I have worked with for over eighteen years at Red Bull for their talent, dedication and hard work. It has been a real privilege for me and I am confident that our technical team is well prepared to complete the final development of the car within the four years of the current regulations.
On a personal level, I would like to thank the shareholders, the late Dietrich Mateschitz, Mark Mateschitz and Chalerma Juvidja, for their continued support, as well as Christian Horner, who has become not only my business partner, but also a friend – we are family members.
“I would also like to thank Oliver Mintzlaff for his leadership and Eddie Jordan, my good friend and manager.”
Christian Hoorner, team leader and executive director: “All of our successes over the past 20 years have been made possible thanks to Adrian’s technical brilliance. His experience and skills have helped us win thirteen titles in twenty seasons. His exceptional ability to create concepts that go beyond Formula 1, his amazing talent for embracing change and finding the right places in the regulations to focus on, have helped Red Bull Racing become a bigger force than I think even the late Dietrich Mateschitz could have imagined.
It has been a great pleasure to work with Adriaan for 19 years. Newey was already a superstar when he joined Red Bull, and twenty years and thirteen titles later he is a legend. Adrian is a friend and someone to whom I will be forever grateful for everything he contributed to our collaboration. The legacy he leaves behind is part of the history of the Milton Keynes team and the RB17 hypercar will be a fitting legacy for his work with us.”
