This year the format of the weekend has changed with a sprint on Saturday, but not everyone was happy with the new order of alternating sessions, which was tested in China two weeks ago.
Valtteri Bottas: “I have to say that I liked the old format better, when we immediately qualified for the main race after a single practice session. Everyone then had a lot to lose if they couldn’t change the settings.”
Lance walk: “The riders have a similar position on this. Personally, I would like to qualify for the sprint on Friday afternoon, followed by qualifying for the race on Saturday morning. I don’t think it’s great to go straight to qualifying after a sprint, where the car is much slower than in the fast lap.”
Sergio Perez: “The temporary lifting of the “Parc Closed” regime increases the workload on the technicians, and attention must be paid to this. There are already 24 stages in the season, and they have an even more difficult time with the Saturday sprints. I think if we change the format a little bit next year to take better care of our people, we will all benefit.”
