George Russell said in Miami that he would only be in favor if Max Verstappen becomes his teammate next year…
George Russell: “I think this is a great idea! In 2022 I came to Mercedes, where Lewis Hamilton had won for years. This is a serious challenge for any driver: to become his partner, to compete in the team for which he has been racing for so many years. But I believe in myself. I believe you have to compete in the same car with the best of the best to prove what you can do.
Lewis has been my teammate for the past three years, every race weekend we motivate each other to give everything. And now I would be happy if Max would come when this happens. I want to fight the best. I told Toto Wolff that I would be happy to race with any driver, although he does not need to ask my opinion or position to make a decision.
If a team gets the opportunity to sign a driver of Max’s caliber, every team will try to take advantage. I’m happy to now be teammate with Lewis, who is still statistically the best driver of all time and battling with him week after week. It would be great to fight Max next.
For Mercedes this is a long-term project; the regulations will change in 2026, so it is important that there is harmony in the team between the 2025 and 2026 seasons. But ultimately the biggest impact will be on the 2,000 people working on the base on the power plant, chassis and new fuel.
But like I said, if you could sign Max, what team wouldn’t?
