The McLaren Formula E team has confirmed that reserve driver Taylor Barnard will drive Sam Bird’s car at the double round in Berlin on May 11 and 12.
A week ago, Bird broke his left arm in a crash during first practice in Monaco, after which he underwent successful surgery, and McLaren wishes him a speedy recovery. In the meantime, 19-year-old Barnard will continue to replace him.
Ian James, team manager: “We are pleased to report that Sam’s recovery is going well. Taylor, his last-minute replacement at Monaco, did an excellent job, as did the team that provided him with effective support.
While Sam recovers, Barnard can gain additional experience. That said, we hope Sam can get back behind the wheel soon.”
In his debut race at Monaco’s classic city circuit, Taylor Barnard started from the back but finished in 14th place, which can be considered a good performance.
By the way, he spent his first race in Formula E at the age of 19 years and 331 days, which means that the Briton became the youngest driver in the history of Formula E.
