Sam Michael: No one can compare to Adrian Newey

Australian engineer Sam Michael worked with Adrian Newey in Formula 1 for a long time: he started his career at Lotus in 1993, moved to Jordan the same year and then worked at Williams, where he became technical director in 2004. and in recent years, before leaving the championship in 2014, he was McLaren’s sporting director.

He then returned to his home country of Australia, where he took on other projects. In particular, he is now working with one of the teams in the Supercar touring series.

In an interview with Speedcafe, Sam Michael commented on Newey’s impending departure from Red Bull Racing.

“Adrian’s reputation speaks for itself,” he said. “He achieved great success with every team he worked with. No one can compare to him. With his cars, various teams and drivers regularly won titles and the constructors’ championship. The same will happen to the team he joins in the next phase of his career.

Plus, Eddie Jordan is in the process of settling his divorce with Red Bull, so he’s in good hands. Eddie is a great master at concluding contracts, which allows him to arrange everything as best as possible.”

However, Jordan doubts whether Newey plans to continue working in Formula 1: “I think he will most likely take a break in his career. I seriously doubt he is negotiating a job with anyone.”
