Max Verstappen brought Red Bull Racing its 75th pole position in the team’s history by winning qualifying at Imola. His teammate Sergio Perez qualified seventh and explained that he had not warmed up the tires before the decisive attempt.
Max Verstappen (1st): “Good qualifying, but it was easy to make a mistake today. Fortunately, we were able to avoid problems. We started the session on slicks, then it started to rain, so it was crucial to make decisions about how to prepare for a fast lap – today we made the right decisions, which I am very happy about.
When I saw the yellow flags because of Valtteri’s stop, I immediately slowed down, so this won’t be a problem. I lost time because of this, but luckily my lap was fast enough for pole position.
It looks like dry weather is expected for Saturday, and we didn’t do well with these cars on the dry track in Imola. Hopefully in the second practice we can evaluate the RB18 in different weather conditions than today.”
Sergio Perez (7th): “All in all a disappointing day, but let’s not forget that this is just the beginning of the weekend. Today I failed, and we did something wrong. It was important to warm up the tires, but that didn’t work and the tires lost grip on the fast lap. In the end red flags stopped me.
However, I am satisfied with the speed of the car and look forward to tomorrow. I hope we can regain positions in the sprint and take a high place at the start of Sunday’s race.”
