Alexander Smolyar won qualifying for the sixth round of the Formula 3 season in Hungary. For the MP Motorsport driver, this is the first pole position in 2022 and the second in the youth series.
At the start of qualifying, most of the peloton left the track immediately, but a number of drivers, including championship leader Victor Martin, left the pits a few minutes after the start of the session.
The riders completed two warm-up laps, after which they started to attack at full strength. Johnny Edgar set a good time first, but Roman Stanek, Rhys Ushijima and Zane Maloney immediately outperformed the Trident rider.
After his attempt, the protocol was led by Isaac Hadjar, but he did not stay in the lead for long – the result of the Hitech pilot surpassed Chao Collet, who returned to the pits as leader.
In the middle of the 30-minute session, the riders returned to the track for a second set of fast laps. Johnny Edgar led the protocol, but was outdone in time by first Arthur Leclerc and then Oliver Berman. After another half minute, the protocol was led by Alexander Smolyar with a result of 1:32.838 s, whose result in the second attempt no one managed to improve.
With nine minutes to go into qualifying, the riders began to return to the track to make the decisive attempt. After going through the warm-up laps, the riders started to attack, but no one managed to show a representative time – three minutes before the end of the session, red flags appeared on the track. The reason was Zach O’Sullivan, who stopped at the start due to technical problems with the car.
The break lasted seven minutes, after which qualifying continued. The riders ran out of time for two warm-up laps, so everyone started attacking right away. However, some didn’t have time to start the fastest lap before time ran out – among them were Berman, Leclerc, Crawford, Hajjar and Marten.
Alexander Smolyar improved his time with tenth place. Rhys Ushijima moved up to second, but his best time was lost as he broke the track boundaries, so Zane Maloney started on the front row.
On Saturday, according to the reverse grid rule, the first twelve places start in reverse order. For example, debutant Oliver Goethe will start tomorrow’s race from pole position. Together with him, Franco Colapinto starts from the front row.
