Max Verstappen won qualifying ahead of Saturday’s sprint in Miami, although he did not drive the best lap and was surprised that he managed to set the first time.
Max Verstappen: “To be honest, the lap left a terrible impression – perhaps due to the fact that it was incredibly difficult to get the tires working effectively during the last session. However, already during the second session the sensations were not the best and were repeated in the final.
When I switched to soft tires I couldn’t improve significantly, but somehow we finished in first place. Of course, I happily accept this result. But for some reason driving did not bring much pleasure, although during training everything went very well, I felt comfortable behind the wheel, I was confident, but in qualifying everything was not so great.
It probably also has to do with the configuration of the route to some extent. After practice I was confident that we could fight for pole position, but when qualifying started it didn’t look like we would be able to get it. And yet somehow we became first. But I just don’t know what happened to the other cars on the last lap.”
